We define an Open System as a system of interacting components (software, hardware and human) with interface specifications that are fully defined, publicly available and maintained according to group consensus. Such systems are vendor independent, as any vendor can, on their own, create a product that interconnects to an Open System. Open Source technologies are one important component of Open Systems. Some examples of Open Systems components are the Linux operating system, the Apache web server and the UNIX operating system. Where a solution cannot be a 100% Open System we carefully select non Open Systems components with preference for multi-sourced technologies. Some of the competitive advantages of Open Systems include:
Custom Technology supports the Australian Open Systems community via event sponsorship and supporting the participation of key staff in AUUG Inc. (the Australian UNIX and Open Systems User Group). Custom Technology Australia started operations almost 20 years ago in 1989 and was originally established as a 'home based' business developing hardware and software solutions for corporate clients and OEMs. With steady growth and widening business activities, it outgrew the home based location. In early 1993 Custom Technology moved into modern office space in "The Hills" district of Sydney, 5 km north of Sydney's geographic centre. In 1998 Custom Technology was appointed as the first Australian distributor for Caldera Inc. (now known as The SCO Group). Caldera's products included the Linux based OpenLinux operating system and the DR-DOS operating system, plus application, development and networking tools for both environments. In early 1999 Custom Technology was appointed the sole Australian distributor for Be, Inc. the developers of the BeOS operating system. In January 2000 Custom Technology discontinued distribution of Caldera's products, but remained a 'Caldera Business Partner' in the eSolutions Provider program, as Caldera set-up a regional office in Sydney run by CustomTech's founder Mr Gordon Hubbard directing Caldera's business across South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and India. In Q4 of 2001 Custom Technology was appointed sole Australian and New Zealand distributor for VirtualTek Corporation's Joydesk messaging and collaboration software. Mid 2002 Custom Technology was appointed sole Australian distributor for Samsung Contact by Samsung SDS Co., Ltd. In 2004 Custom
Technology
was appointed sole Australian distributor for Scalix Incorporated
and established a SmoothWall Security
Centre. In 2005 Custom
Technology was appointed as SugarCRM
value added distributor in ANZ, started distribution for Sistech SA
and expanded the partnership with SmoothWall
to include Australian & New Zealand distribution of SmoothWall
security products. Custom Technology also became a distributor for NoMachine and sole ANZ distributor
for IGEL
Technology GmbH.
